Mayor Anthony Williams and the DC Office of Planning presented the completed Anacostia Waterfront Initiative Framework Plan to the public. The completed plan is the framework for growth in 21st century Washington, with the Anacostia River at its center.
During the presentation, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and city officials discussed highlights of the completed plan, the proposed AWI Corporation—an entity focused solely on waterfront development—and the federal Anacostia Watershed Legislation, soon to be introduced. The AWI project area encompasses approximately 2,800 acres and will ultimately involve development of more than 4,500 residential housing units, 600,000 square feet of retail development, and 3 million square feet of commercial office space.
