Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects to Walter E. Washington the District's first elected mayor. In attendance were city leaders, former mayors, Mayor Washington's former Cabinet and political advisers, city and federal government workers. Mayor Anthony Williams delivered remarks during funeral services at the National Cathedral and later presented Mary Burke Washington with the District flag during ceremonies at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. The funeral services were open to the public.
