Design Team Selected for Kingman Island Environmental Education Center

HOPE Center Opens in Anacostia

Mayor Williams announces the winner of the design competition for a new environmental education center on Kingman Island in the District of Columbia's Anacostia River. A selection committee of community residents, urban planners, architects and environmental advocates chose STUDIOS Architecture to design the center, which will be the centerpiece in transforming Kingman Island from a waste dump to a nature park. The Kingman Island project is part of the initiative to revitalize the Anacostia Waterfront. Green Spaces for DC, the competition organizer, challenged entrants to design a structure to obtain the Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the highest rating for an environmentally responsible building from the Washington-based US Green Building Council.
