Mayor Williams Hails Hands on DC

Thousands of volunteers to raise scholarship funds and repair schools

Mayor Anthony Williams has announced his support for Hands on DC, a 100% volunteer run city-wide work-a-thon to renovate DC public schools and raise money for the college scholarships.

On Saturday, April 10th thousands of local HODC volunteers will spend the day working at DC Public Schools and raising tens of thousands of dollars for college scholarships. In the past four years, 10,000 Hands on DC volunteers have raised $250,000 in college scholarships and spent over 50,000 hours renovating aging DC public schools.

Mayor Williams said "When I took office, I called upon each and every member of the community to become our partner in turning this city around. The volunteers of Hands on DC have taken up that challenge. I urge you to join them in bringing better schools and brighter futures for our children."

At Anacostia Senior High, one of the 46 schools scheduled to receive much needed work on April 10th from Hands On DC volunteers, they will be working with students and alumni to create a memorial for Kelli Bradford, a 16 year old Anacostia student and basketball player who was recently killed by an alleged drunken driver.

Although the Mayor will be out of town during the event, he has asked his office to join the Hands on DC volunteers on April 10th. They will be working with teams of parents, White House employees, students, electricians from Bell Atlantic, AmeriCorps members, teachers, employees of the National Education Association, and thousands of other volunteers. All of the volunteers will meet Saturday morning at Eastern High School at the 1700 block of East Capitol Street, NE, between 8:30 and 9 AM for a kick-off before heading to their schools.

Hands on DC co-director Karen Larson said, 'We are excited that the mayor has shown his support and asked his office to join thousands of volunteers in support of this event. This event brings the community into the schools, physically improving them and letting the students know their importance to the community. It also brings people together to involve them in the schools, on Saturday April 10th and on many days in the future."
