Mayor Williams Names New Director of Department of Health

Charges Dr. Walks With Expanding Care to Uninsured and Underserved Residents

Washington, D.C. – Mayor Anthony A. Williams today named Dr. Ivan C.A.Walks as the new Director of the Department of Health. Dr. Walks will manage the Department responsible for delivering health care services, implementing and administering the District's health insurance programs, setting policy and serving as the focal point for policies affecting and safeguarding public health within the District.

"Dr. Walks has years of experience in health and human services, and is a nationally recognized leader in the field," said Mayor Williams. "He has the experience and the commitment to help us fix our health care crisis so that all residents have access to quality, affordable health care—regardless of what their income is or where they live."

The Mayor also announced the appointments of Ms. Darlene R. Taylor as Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations; Ms. Carlene Cheatam as Special Assistant and Liaison to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Community; Mr. Greg Chen as Director of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, Mr. Ken Snyder as Director of Communications; and Ms. Charly Carter as Director of the Office of Public Advocate.
