Mayor Williams Announces Grocery Store, Expedited Development Agreement For Columbia Heights

(Washington, D.C.) - Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced plans to bring a new Giant Grocery store and expedite the development of parcels 27 and 29 in Columbia Heights that languished unproductively for 30 years, during a press conference today at Tivoli Theater.

"This agreement marks the beginning of long-overdue development in Columbia Heights. It represents this administration's effort to bring needed economic development to the community," said the Mayor. "My objective is to ensure that the revitalization will occur in a sensible manner ensures that promises of revitalization are feasible and achievable within a specified timeframe."

The developer of parcel 29 has agreed to propose a site plan that will not destroy the exterior wall of the Tivoli Theater for construction of the supermarket. The city will assist the developer to consider all available re-use and feasible options for the Tivoli.

"The Mayor's decision that there will be no breaking through of the rear wall of the Tivoli assures the adaptation and preservation of this historic theater. I congratulate him on this action," Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1).

The District is also immediately seeking developers for nearby parcels 15 and 26, so there will be comprehensive revitalization of Columbia Heights.

"Mayor Williams, his Economic Development staff, Councilmember Graham, the RLA Board, and the Development Team are to be congratulated for producing a workable plan surrounding the Tivoli site. More than 30 years ago, I watched in stunned disbelief as the 14th Street corridor burned during the riots of 1968. I am deeply grateful that this very significant development will move forward to revitalize this community," said Councilmember Charlene Drew Jarvis, Chair of the Committee of Economic Development that oversees the RLA Board.

"The Horning Brothers and Giant Foods should be commended for their hard work and willingness to make this happen and their commitment to the community," said the Mayor.
