Mayor Williams Joins Neighboring County for Border Cleanup
(Washington, D.C.) Mayor Anthony A. Williams today teamed up with Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan to clean up Jesup Blair Park, which borders both the District and Montgomery County, as part of a "Joint Jurisdictional Boundary Cleanup and Beautification Project."
The 'clean up' is part of an initiative to establish and maintain good neighborhood relationships with the jurisdictions adjacent to the District and to reinforce the city's commitment to work in partnership with neighboring counties. This event was part of the Great American Cleanup eight-week campaign that began on April 1, 2000 and will extend through May 31, 2000.
"Keeping the District clean is everyone's responsibility and encourages community pride," said Mayor Williams. "This event is an opportunity to reach across our borders and make our shared community cleaner. Through the Great American Cleanup, citizens are making progress toward a major goal identified at our Citizen Summit -- building and sustaining healthy neighborhoods."
The District will work in partnership with Keep Washington DC Beautiful, Inc. to host several activities including a public awareness campaign, neighborhood cleanups, a bike riders cleanup, a cleanup of the Anacostia River, and a poster contest for students K-12. The program will involve more than 10,000 communities across the countries and is expected to mobilize more than two million volunteers. District and Prince George's County volunteers also participated in a jurisdictional cleanup at Banks Place, NE and 63rd Street to Fitch Street, SE and Southern Avenue.
