Mayor Discusses Success of Y2K Weekend

(Washington, D.C.) - Mayor Anthony A. Williams wrapped up the Y2K weekend and discussed a smooth transition into the Millennium during a press conference at One Judiciary Square. The Mayor plans to remain vigilant in his efforts to ensure that all systems continue to work fine over the next few days.

"I'm proud to tell you today that we had a safe, smooth transition into the new Millennium," said the Mayor. "Our goal all along was to provide uninterrupted services to District residents and so far we've achieved that goal."

Ninety-five percent of the District's mission critical systems were tested this weekend after the rollover and were found to be functioning fine. Testing will continue for the next few days as systems operate in a real time environment. The District expects that the business operations will continue to operate without any problems.

"When I took office, most pundits and even some Y2K experts told me that the District would never make our Y2K deadline. We made national headlines because we were so far behind. But today our government is running full speed, we're hitting every cylinder and moving forward," said the Mayor.

Reports from the Department of Motor Vehicles indicate normal business operations with no glitches. Banking systems have reported no disruptions in Washington, domestically or internationally, according to the FDIC. Other city agencies are reporting similar smooth operations in customer service.

The Mayor thanked the hundreds of District employees who worked over the weekend to ensure the smooth Y2K transition, including those staffing the District's Command Centers.

First review of "Main Street Millennium" appears to show that approximately 400,000 people on the mall attended the celebration. A full financial accounting is forthcoming, but early indications are that "Main Street Millennium" stayed within budget.
