Mayor Williams Launched "Beyond The Monuments" Heritage Tourism Initiative with Local and Federal Partners
(Washington, DC)- Mayor Anthony A. Williams, in conjunction with local and federal partners, launched the "Beyond the Monuments" initiative on Thursday, June 1st at 2:00 p.m. at the "U" Street Metro Station. The initiative showcases Washington, DC as a destination with historical attractions beyond the National Mall.
The partners include the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Washington Convention Center Authority, the Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the Historical Society of Washington, and the DC Heritage Tourism Coalition.
"Beyond the Monuments" includes a series of walking tours Saturday, June 3, 2000 from 11:00 am - 4:00 p.m. The tours will feature five historic neighborhoods accessible by Metro: Dupont Circle/Kalorama, Shaw/U Street, Georgetown, Lafayette Square and Downtown. Free "Beyond the Monuments" tour cards feature a map with historical and cultural attractions. Each location also features live outdoor music.
Tourism is the number one private sector industry in the District of Columbia, with an annual impact of $4.23 billion. This initiative is the result of a public/private partnership that seeks to bring millions of tourism dollars to local businesses and a new appreciation for the city's beauty, history and local heritage.
"I want District visitors to experience the history of our city, not just the history of our Nation's Capital," said Mayor Williams. "More travelers visit Washington, DC for cultural and historical attractions than anywhere else in the nation. I'm glad we can show them what the District has to offer."
