Mayor Williams Visits Vehicle Inspection Station As Part of Commitment to Improve Customer Service

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams today visited the District's vehicle inspection station on Half Street, SW, to announce several steps to immediately improve customer service and decrease time spent waiting in line.

The Mayor said that 23 new inspectors have been hired and will enable the inspection facility to keep all 8 inspection bays open during regular business hours. The Mayor also announced that beginning on May 30th, the inspection station will be open until 10:00 pm Monday through Friday.

The inspection facility is now providing a separate waiting line and dedicated bays to the District's taxicabs, which are required to go through inspection twice a year, as opposed to once every two years for other cars. This improved service is also designed to reduce processing time for taxicab vehicles.

"As we looked at the problems contributing to the long wait and short patience, our DMV team saw that cabs accounted for a high percentage of cars in the line," said Mayor Williams. "With our new employees, extended hours and other improvements, we'll be able to serve you better, faster than we have before."

The current operating hours for the inspection station are:

  • Monday through Friday
  •  6:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • Saturday
  •  7:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Beginning May 30th, operating hours will be:

  • Monday through Friday
  •  6:00 am to 10:00 pm
  • Saturday
  •  7:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Joining the Mayor for his visit to the inspection station were DMV Director Sherryl Hobbs Newman and Facility Manager Fred Loney. The Mayor joined DMV employee William Boone as he walked up and down the line, answering questions and directing drivers into the right lines.
