Mayor Williams Announces $1 Million Investment In Latino Community Education Programs
(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams will announce this evening at the Hispanic Heritage Celebration a $1 million budget allotment to enhance Latino Community Education Programs. This is the first and largest District budget allotment dedicated to Latino education programs.
The million dollars is part of the 2000-2001 city budget. Under this allotment, existing local Latino Community Education Programs could receive assistance to expand their outreach to educate more children, youth and adults or enhance existing programs such as after-schools programs, civic education, youth programs, computer programs, life skills and entrepreneurial programs.
"Investing in education and community services is a down payment on our future," said Mayor Anthony A. Williams. "I'm committed to making sure that all residents have an opportunity to succeed."
The $1 million budget allotment will be allocated through the Mayor's Office of Latino Affairs according to grant guidelines. The application process is currently being established.
The Mayors' Office of Latino Affairs advocates for the interest of the Latino communities in the District. It is located at the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center, 2000 14th Street, NW, Second Floor.
