The District To Receive Federal Emergency Funds To Help Families Bear High Fuel Costs This Winter

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that the District of Columbia government will receive $1.2 million to help assist low-income residents pay their heating oil, natural gas, and propane bills this winter. This is the largest amount of emergency funds received for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) under the DC Energy Office.

The grant is part of the $400 million President Clinton directed the Department of Health and Human Services to release last Saturday to Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs nationwide. It is the largest release of LIHEAP emergency funds ever. Under the program, the District could raise benefit levels or expand its outreach to help more families.

"This is good news for District residents who did not have a chance to plan for the unexpected high fuel prices," said Mayor Anthony A. Williams. "As temperatures start to drop, our most vulnerable citizens, our seniors and those families that are economically challenged, will have the support they need to face the high heating fuel prices this coming winter thanks to the advanced planning of the Clinton Administration."

The District's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, under the DC Energy Office (www.dcenergy.org) is a financial energy assistance program that helps eligible low-income District residents meet the rising cost of home energy. The DC Energy Office is supported through federal funds from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

For additional information on the program, contact the DC Energy Office at 2000 14th Street, NW, Suite #300 East, Washington, DC 20009 or call the DC Energy Office Hotline at 202-673-6750.
