Mayor Williams Announces Major Economic Development Project In Brentwood Neighborhood

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams today was joined by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to announce the location of a Kmart and Giant food store to what is now the Brentwood Impound Lot. This new development, which will bring more than 450 new jobs to Ward 5, is an important step toward delivering on the mayor's promise to bring economic development and commercial revitalization to our city's neighborhoods.

Combined, Kmart and Giant will offer 150,000 square feet of retail space and generate about $45 million in sales. Mayor Williams said, "We are moving to bring economic development to every ward in this city. We intend to multiply these partnerships, which help extend economic prosperity throughout the District."

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, whose tax abatement legislation paved the way for this development, said, "The mayor's program is modeled after my Commercial Revitalization Tax Credit legislation. I believe this is a great way to help renew our urban neighborhoods, and what better place to start than our Nation's Capital."

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton explained how this project is significant to the entire North East quadrant saying, "The Kmart/Giant complex, as does full funding for the New York Avenue Metro Station, furthers the economic development of the entire city."

Dayle Apley, Divisional Vice President of Public Policy for Kmart, said "Kmart is very excited about bringing jobs to the District as well as a great shopping opportunity for our customers in this city." Giant foods echoed this sentiment by saying, "We look forward to being a part of this project because it will bring food and services to an area that is underserved and will significantly help the District's tax base.

Construction on the project is expected to begin in April of 2001; completion of the project is expected in 2002.
