Light Snow With Some Accumulation Expected in the District
DPW Mobilizes Crews
The National Weather Service is forecasting intermittent snow flurries in the DC area until this afternoon. A heavier burst of snow may occur around 2:00 pm before the snow tapers off. The city can expect snow accumulation of up to 1 inch, temperatures in the mid-30s, and some gusty winds.
The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) has deployed 63 salt-spreading trucks, which will stay on the streets until the snow has abated. During this type of operation, trucks will focus on salting bridges, ramps, and overpasses, as well as hilly residential streets and downtown traffic corridors.
Leslie Hotaling, Interim Director of DPW, said, "We will reassess around 2:30 pm, well in advance of the evening rush hour, just in case we need to expand our operation. At this point, I'm not foreseeing that to be necessary." Ms. Hotaling also noted that residual salt, still on the streets from last week's snow deployment, should preclude any real problems.
