Presidential Inauguration Day Street Vending Opportunities
(Washington, DC) The Executive Office of the Mayor and the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) announced today that registration for street vending opportunities during the presidential inauguration will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the DC Armory located at 2001 East Capitol Street, SE. Hours of registration are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The presidential inauguration is Saturday, January 20, 2001.
The District of Columbia government, in cooperation with the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), will conduct a one-stop, one-time registration for all interested vendors for this special event. Vendors will be selected on a "first come, first serve" basis. As in previous inaugurations, the PIC has first choice in selecting vendor sites. Available vending locations will be on display during the registration.
Mayor Anthony A. Williams encourages local businesses to participate in this special vending opportunity. He said, "The District of Columbia is a great place to do business. Commemorating the presidential inaugural is an important and unique opportunity for residents and businesses in our Nation's Capital."
PIC Executive Director Jeanne Johnson Phillips said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee is happy to be working closely with the District of Columbia government. "This is a special time for all Americans, and it is very important to us that DC residents and local businesses enjoy the benefits of this inauguration," she said.
To participate in this registration, licensed DC vendors must provide the following information:
- a current DC street vending license;
- a second form of identification, such as a government-issued picture ID;
- a Certificate of Good Standing from the DC Office of Tax & Revenue (727-4TAX); and
- all applicable food certifications.
Registration for this special event is free for all current DC street vendors.
For vendors who are not licensed in the District of Columbia, the following information, fees, and tax payments are required:
- two forms of identification, one of which must be a government-issued picture ID, such as a drivers license;
- a $55 special event fee (food) and/or $47 special event fee (non-food); and
- a $125 prepaid tax payment.
Cash or certified checks made payable to the DC Treasurer will be accepted.
District government officials will conduct on-site inspections of vendors to ensure compliance with DC vending regulations. For more information about DC vending regulations, contact the DC Office of Documents and Administrative Issuances at (202) 727-5090.
The PIC owns the trademark and copyrights to all official inaugural merchandise. Vendors interested in purchasing wholesale inaugural merchandise from the PIC should call (202) 772-9403.
Vendors should be aware that vending is prohibited on all properties under the jurisdiction of the US Park Service, including the National Mall and the sidewalks along Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Illegal vending will not be permitted, and violators are subject to the penalties imposed by law.
In addition, for security reasons, the US Secret Service has mandated that all current roadway vendors issued permits during the monthly lottery must relocate their stands to designated locations on Independence Avenue, SW. Roadway vendors must move their stands by close of business on Friday, January 19, 2001 and may return to their designated locations on Sunday, January 21, 2001.
