District Receives Funds to Help Seniors Buy Fresh Produce at Farmers Markets

(Washington, DC) On January 4th, Mayor Anthony A. Williams and DC Department of Health Director Ivan C.A. Walks accepted a $237,500 grant to the District from United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman. The grant will help the city's low-income seniors buy fresh produce at farmers markets. During the 2001 harvest season, eligible seniors will receive a $25 coupon to be redeemed at approved farmers markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs. This grant award is a result of a national program announced by President Clinton last November.

"I am committed to finding creative solutions to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens, particularly our seniors. This grant is an example of how local and federal governments can work together to keep this commitment," commented Mayor Williams.

"Providing fresh fruits and vegetables to our seniors will result in significant improvement in their diets and ultimately their health," said Dr. Walks. "We recognize the role that fruits and vegetables play in maintaining good health, and we're extremely pleased that the USDA has made this opportunity available to our senior citizens."
