Liberal Leave Policy in Effect on Thursday, January 18 for District of Columbia Government
City Anticipates Major Traffic Congestion in Downtown
(Washington, DC) District of Columbia Personnel Director Milou Carolan has announced a liberal leave policy will be in effect on Thursday, January 18, 2001, for District of Columbia government employees. Emergency employees and employees of the Metropolitan Police Department, the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, the Emergency Management Agency, and the DC Department of Corrections are not covered by this policy and are expected to report to work as scheduled on January 18.
Major traffic congestion problems are anticipated in the downtown Washington, DC area due to the Presidential Inaugural Opening Celebration scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial. To reduce the potential for traffic gridlock, employees may use annual leave, leave without pay or earned compensatory time for the entire workday on Thursday, January 18, 2001, without obtaining advance approval or providing detailed justification. Normal requirements for an employee to notify his or her supervisor within prescribed time limits are suspended. Employees not reporting for duty will be charged the appropriate leave for the entire workday.
