(Washington, DC) - Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Director Lucinda M. Babers of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced the launch of a new email notification service that encourages customers to conduct a variety of renewal transactions online and skip the trip to the DMV. Customers will receive email alerts within 60 days of the expiration date to renew:
- vehicle registrations
- driver’s licenses
- identification cards
“The District is always looking for ways to make government services function more efficiently,” said Mayor Fenty. “DMV customers will save valuable time by conducting their transactions with greater convenience.”
The email notification service officially began on January 12. To date, the service has already reduced the Department’s mailing and production costs by over $1,000, with increased savings anticipated in future years as more customers activate their accounts. In addition, approximately 2,547 residents have conducted a renewal online using the email notification service and avoided the trip to the DMV.
“This new service is simply one of the many technology enhancements we provide to our customers to remind them of their renewal status,” said DMV Director Lucinda Babers. “Customers can now easily perform renewal transactions virtually wherever and whenever they choose.”
Residents can activate their accounts at dmv.dc.gov by clicking the “Add/Update Email Address” link in the Online Services section of the website and submitting their email address to begin receiving email notifications. When renewing online, customers can print a temporary 45-day vehicle registration, driver’s license, or identification card, which allows them to complete their renewal and have a legal document to use until they receive the original in the mail. Email alerts to renew vehicle inspections and pick up personalized tags are also offered.
The notification service automatically mails a paper notice via the United States Postal Service if customers do not conduct their renewal transaction within 25 days of expiration.
